Who Are They?

According to the Palestinian newspaper Al Ayyam, a group that uses Al Qa'eda kind of language distributed a leaflet giving all non-Muslim foreigners one month to leave Khan Younis/Gaza.

Here's a translation/paraphrase of the Arabic newspaper report: Whoever they are wrote that they want to fight those who are against the application of God's rule and who want western laws that resulted in corruption of religion. "The land cries from "usury, fornication, alcohol, drugs, vanity in dress, and injustice." They asked: "Is there no man amongst you who is like Al Mu'tasem, Salah el Deen, Usama ben Laden, Abu Mus'ab al Zarqawi?...Yes, there is such a man among us, they answer, and soon he will appear in Palestine. They issued a warning to the "heads of corruption" in and out of the Palestinian Authority, particularly those calling for "democracy", and collaborators with Jews, and asked them to repend and come back to God. Also warned merchants of Alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, music cassettes and videos (which were described as obscene). They also warned every girl against going out wearing pants and shirst and showing their hair and beauty. They also warned owners of wedding halls against having immoral parties. They asked the police not to obstruct their msision fighting "corruption" and said they will target all those in authority wheather in the PA, the political organizations, or powerful families.

وأكدت جماعة جيش الجهاد في بيان لها حمل صبغة بيانات القاعدة ــ كما وصفه الكثير من المراقبين ــ إن الجهاد لن يلهيها عن محاربة الشرك الذي قالت انه: "لقد بقي هناك شرك آخر يجب قتاله ومحاربته وهو عدم تطبيق حكم الله، والرضا بالقوانين الوضعية الغربية الكفرية، وما ترتب عليها من مفسدة كبيرة للدين، فقد اشتكت الأرض من الربا والزنا والخمر والمخدرات والتبرج والظلم..".
وتساءلت الجماعة : أليس فيكم رجل كالمعتصم وصلاح الدين وأسامة بن لادن وأبو مصعب الزرقاوي، وتجيب في بيانها: بلى، إن فينا ذلك الرجل وسيخرج قريبا بإذن الله على ارض فلسطين.
ووجهت جماعة جيش الجهاد، إنذارها إلى من سمتهم رؤوس الفساد من داخل السلطة الفلسطينية، وخارجها، خاصة المنادين بالديمقراطية "الكفرية"، والعملاء المتعاونين مع اليهود، ودعتهم إلى التوبة والرجوع إلى الله، وتجار الخمور والمخدرات والدخان، كما طال الإنذار بائعي أشرطة واسطوانات الأغاني والأفلام التي وصفتها "بالخليعة"، ووصل الإنذار إلى كل فتاة تخرج بالبنطال والقميص وتكشف شعرها وتظهر مفاتنها،، كما أنذرت أصحاب صالات الأفراح وحذرتهم من إقامة حفلات ماجنة داخلها.
ودعا بيان الجماعة أفراد الشرطة إلى عدم اعتراض طريقهم، محذرة إياهم من الوقوف في طريق محاربة الفاسدين.
وشدد البيان على أنهم سيلاحقون كل رؤوس الفساد الكبيرة قبل الصغيرة، مؤكدين أنهم سيلاحقون أصحاب النفوذ في السلطة والتنظيمات والعائلات الكبيرة.

It's a bit odd that this appears almost at the same time that Mahmoud Abbas says that there is evidence of Al Qa'eda infiltration in Gaza. Too much of a coincident? The statement and the group may be fake, an attempt to discredit Hamas. This is a possibility. It could also be an attempt by Israel to redirect all anger and frustration away from the occupation (which is hardly mentioned in the above report) towards Palestinians deemed "infidels" and "corrupt."

It could also be for real. I wouldn't rule that out.

The statement definitely reinterpretes the word "corruption": Hamas won the election because it promised to fight PA corruption, which for most Palestinians it meant "finanical and administrative corruption." But now we are hearing about "moral corruption" in accordance of the Islamist interpretation.

I have a fear that it will not be hard to distract poeple from the other corruptions by displacing all their anger on those who are "morally corrupt" because they don't conform to a narrow Islamic social agenda.
