University students at one Lebanese university handed Oscars for the worst Arabic songs. I was happy to see that they chose Dana as worst singer. I posted her vidoe clip as the worst ever a couple of months ago on this blog.
Dominique (above), who is awful, won the oscar for worst lyrics. Her video is truely retarded. It's in bad taste, sexist, and just plain stupid. If you don't believe me, watch here at your own risk.
I forgot to mention that there is an ill-fated baby in this clip. This usually means it's really really bad. Some directors think that by throwing a kid in, the clip will be cutified. Not true. Many a baby ruined a good song (ask Kathem al Saher,, who holds the record: to date he has ruined 4 songs using children under 5), but in this case this is a baby ruined by Dominique's song. He should sue.
Seriously now, I highly approve of the the approach these students chose. As much as they disapprove of these "singers,"they are against censoring them, which is what the conservatives are always clamouring to do (then where do you stop?) Instead, they satirize and critique, aiming at marginalizing such performers and promoting the better ones.
So in the culture wars in the Arab world, it does not need to be either Dana or Hanan al Turk (which, in case you've just returned from outerspace, has decided to wear a headscarf).
It could be Fairuz, Majeda al Roumi, or Julia Boutros (to name only three I happened to like).
