What is it with kissing these days! Men don't seem able to keep their lips to themselves. First Richard Gere and now Ahmadinajad! The Iranian president was accused of "indecency" for kissing the hand of his elderly teacher at some ceremony honoring teachers. His accusers are politically to the right of him, which is a reminder that there are debates and tensions in Iran from both right and left but more importantly that things can always get worse (a Palestinian mindset really embodied by the term pessioptimism). Those folks are clearly keeping a close eye on the president, because, you know, it's a slippery slope this kissing business. The Arab poet warned of the dangers of sliding down the slippery slope when he said: "Nazratun, fabtisamatun, fasalamun, fakalamun, famaw3edun, faliqa'" then allah yostor. Translation: a gaze, a smile, a greeting, a word, a date, a meeting...
So imagine if a kiss is involved right from the beginning!! Hang him, I say!

Come on Amal, it's his teacher! Do you not remember al-kawla: "man 3allamany 7arfan sirtou lahou 3abdan" (The one who teaches me a letter, I will become his slave). I think the president is just expressing humility in front of his teacher. Nothing comparable to Gere who kissed the Indian actress so passionately that he had to twist and turn and bend and God knows what! It is a pity that a kiss becomes politicized: We're not very far from the times when Helen of Paris started a war. Rabbi yostor , as you say, but I know you're just making fun of the whole thing!
Don't know whether you're following French presidential debate, but there were no kisses between Segolene Royal and Nicolas Sarkozy, but a lot of slaps mostly delivered by Royal. Of course, as in the US, they almost pretend to differ on everything, but when it comes to the Middle East and Iran, they were actually competing who would be the toughest with Iran!!
Anyhow, the future of Arabs and Muslims in France will be hell if Sarkozy wins.
ng,
a kiss is a kiss is a kiss.
Stop making excuses for Ahmadinajar. He should know better.
I'm not following the French elections. I'm still recovering from the Mjaddara vote over the weekend. As usual my candidate lost. I really hope that one day before I die I'll vote for someone or something that wins. It doesn't matter if it's for Mjaddara, makloubeh, superstar, anything. just once. men nefsi.
I wasn't making excuses, but, anyhow, the irony is that the kiss takes place at the same time that Iran is hunting women who are wearing the hijab inappropriately.
WEll, continue voting for the Tunisians in Super Star--they're doing great. May be if Yusra wins, then you will have voted for a winner!
ِDear Amal,
I am an Iranian and I know What ia behind this kissing. I am agree with this part of ng's comment:
"the irony is that the kiss takes place at the same time that Iran is hunting women who are wearing the hijab inappropriately."
This is not a thanksgiving kiss. This is IRI and their propaganda machine.
IRI does not care about women and in treat them less than a slave. Women in IRI are not even second citizens. they are the symbol and pressure to all population.
Stoning, Hanging, torture , Rape and less than all Imprisonment is the answer to anybody who ask for Human rights.
IRI is an "ISLAMIC" government but people are not an Islamic nation .
Islam is Islam, all around the world.
have you seen this two pics?
ng,
I know you weren't making excuses. I was just joking.
as to the irony: yes, but patriarchy works this way: rewards the "good" women and punishes the "bad" ones. So in a sense it's consistent in a way.
I stopped voting for Yusra. I like her way too much to vote for her. I'm thinking of voting for Hillary, though : )
anonymous,
what pictures? Nothing came through.
Amal, you spelled pessoptimist wrong. Check Emile Habiby. :)
